The phone rang after dinner and Cam rushed to answer it first.

“Hello?”

“Cam?” Sharon’s voice sounded different on the phone, but it was unmistakable.

“Sharon!” Cam’s face lit up.

“So, I came out to my parents.” Cam froze in shock. Apparently she wasn’t the only one unable to keep their relationship a secret.

“Really?! How’d it go?”

“I think we’re about to find out,” Sharon replied hesitantly. “My mom wants to talk to you.”

“Wait, what?” Cam replied, hoping she’d heard her wrong.

“I’m sorry in advance.”

Cam’s heart pounded in her chest. She wanted to protest but she could already hear the muffled voice of a woman asking for the phone. Shit, shit, shit! Cam quickly retreated to her room for some privacy, grateful for the cordless phone.

“Is this some kind of joke?” Cam immediately straightened her body, almost standing at attention, Sharon’s mom triggering the reflexes she’d honed in boot camp.

“Ma’am?” Cam asked.

“We send her to the Marine Corps and she comes home a lesbian. Is this some game to you? Find a pretty, impressionable young woman and see if you can turn her?”

The question was so ridiculous Cam almost laughed. Thankfully her fear stopped her in time.

“Mom!” Sharon’s yell was clear through the phone.

Cam took a deep breath. A lot hinged on her response. “Ma’am, I’m sure this came as a surprise to you, and you’re trying to understand it, but this isn’t a game. She chose me before I said a word to her.” Cam paused for emphasis. There was no other way to explain their relationship. “I’m just trying to keep up with her.”

No response came for several breaths. Cam swallowed hard and tried to breathe, feeling the need to speak but not finding the words. The last thing she wanted to do was ramble to Sharon’s mom.

“Then what are your intentions with my daughter?”

Cam panicked and spoke without thinking, afraid to let too much time pass. “I don’t know how to answer that. I don’t have any intentions but to love her.” Oh shit, what did I just say? The line was silent for several breaths.

“Does she know that?” The voice at the other end of the line didn’t change in tone, and Cam wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad sign.

“Not in those exact words, no.”

“A little advice then. Be damn sure before telling her. And then do it in person, not over the phone.” Did Cam imagine it, or did her voice soften just a little?

“Aye ma’am.” Cam was certain she heard her mutter ‘Marines’ under her breath, but if the worst Sharon’s mom could complain about was Cam being overly formal, then that was a victory. Cam continued before Sharon’s mom interrupted. “But I am sure.” She put as much conviction behind it as she could. She may still be scared shitless, but she had to show Sharon’s mom she meant it. The line was silent and Cam didn’t know what she should say so she waited, feeling her heart beat out of her chest.

“Did you already
